EXSPERIANCE
In 2007 I started working at Rocking Horse day nursery where I acquired my NVQ level 2, Early years and first aid qualifications. I worked there for a year whilst gaining my NVQ, which took me to the end of my contract. After leaving here I went onto become a licensee with my Mother the Stanton Institute Public House. During this time I carried on with my vocation in childcare and cared for a child during the week for four hours each day. The little boy was 8 years of age an was Autistic. I feel that this helped me learn a great deal about childrens individual needs and how to deal with the learning difficulties that many people are faced with.
After a year of working with this family I was offered a full time position as a support worker, working with children with different types of special needs and disabilities like Autism, ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome etc.
I did this for a short while, but contininually tried to look for work as a nanny, because although being a support worker was very rewarding and broadened my experience, I felt it was more rewarding working with families and looking after the same child/ children to help them grow and develop.
I then found myself working as a full time nanny for a family with a six year old boy called Tom with Asperger's Syndrome and an 8 month old girl called Grace. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with this family, I have watched Grace grow into a tot full of character. I have done so much with Grace since we've been together, as soon as I started we began a sign language course and by the age of ten months she could use basic signs when she wanted something. We have been swimming every week, regularly go to play groups so that she can interact with other children and we go on many day trips to farms, parks and zoos etc. Grace is very advanced for her age and I believe that the one to one interaction has played a large part in that (as well as her being a bright little girl!). I haven't spent as much time with Tom obviously due to him being at school. I get to the home around 7:30 - 8:00am and get the children ready for school then walk Tommy to school, spend the day with Grace until we need to pick Tom up at 3:15pm. When we get back to their home we discuss what he's done at school and talk about any problems that he's has, then we do some reading, spellings and look at any homework he has been given. When I first started, Tom was difficult to control and his parents very struggling to calm him down and discipline him due to his Asperger's, he was also very behind at school. We all worked together to get him into a strict routine and work out what kind of treatment and discipline he would respond to. This has worked wonderfully and he is now a much happier little boy, who is enjoying school and is doing really well in many subjects that he was originally behind on.
I know that they have been very pleased with the work that I've done and would be more than happy to speak to anyone about their experience of me working with their children.
i have referances from both famlies and childminder if needed.
