About Me

Hello I'm Susan, a Nanny currently working in Sheffield. I have been a Nanny for over 5 years and have fallen in love with it. For me, being a nanny is the most wonderful, rewarding job and a role I am very passionate about. Creating a close bond with the family and children I work for and seeing and encouraging children to grow, learn, develop and fulfill their potential is so special.

I love the freedom of being a nanny and being able to plan our days with a variety of activities and experiences, whether that be at home reading stories, singing, playing, pretending or building giant towers, or going out to the park, farm, a playgroup to make friends, or simply jumping in muddy puddles and feeding the ducks. I enjoy planning playful and stimulating activities that are focused around a child's current interests to further encourage their learning and development and to ensure they know their thoughts and opinions matter and are heard.

My Experience

I have been working in the childcare sector for 10 years. I have always wanted to work with children and began childcare education at secondary school during my GCSEs where I achieved my Level 2 Certificate.
I studied Childcare and Education at college and achieved my Level 3 qualification. During my time at college I attended placements 2 days a week for the 2 years I was there. These placements were in a variety of nurseries and primary schools. It was here that I really discovered my passion to work in the Early Years.
I attended Sheffield Hallam University and studied BA Early Childhood Studies (0-8 years focus), this broadened my knowledge and experience further, with modules including children's health, the importance of play, safeguarding, outdoor and alternative learning experiences, therapeutic approaches to learning, education and politics and nature vs nurture. I also attended placements for the 3 years I was there at two primary schools and at a childminders.
During my placements I gained a variety of experience with children from different social backgrounds, ethnicities, stages of development and those who spoke English as an additional language (EAL)
In my third year I decided to focus my research project around the use of play to encourage the learning and development of children with EAL. I had experienced first hand how using play with a little girl in reception who could not speak the same language, enabled us to create a bond and encouraged her to communicate with me in different ways and I was able to understand her. This solidified my passion of wanting to work with children and specifically how important and valuable play really is in the early years and beyond.
After completing my degree I began working with the childminder I had done my placement with as her assistant. It was here that I was able to develop closer bonds and relationships with children and parents than before in schools, and enjoyed being able to plan different activities and learning experiences with the children both indoors and outdoors. I was also able to gain experience with older children whilst doing the school runs and providing before and after school activities.

In 2019 I became a nanny and worked for 3 different families throughout the week. I worked 2 days a week for one family who had a boy aged 2, I did before and after school for the second family who had a girl aged 4 and a boy aged 7 and then 2 days a week for the third who was a foster carer, and her 4 foster children aged 4, 8, 12 and 15.

In 2020 I became a full-time Nanny for a wonderful family and their 2 boys. I had sole charge of the 3 year old boy and worked alongside their mother who was on maternity with the baby. This provided me with experience of caring for a newborn. I took over from mum when she returned to work and had sole charge of both boys until the eldest started preschool.
My typical day as a nanny currently involves:
-Arriving at the home, helping to prepare/feed breakfast.
-Getting the children dressed, teeth brushed and ready for the day.
-Taking the eldest to school
-Providing activities at the home, playing, reading stories, playing games, jigsaws, arts and crafts, imaginary play etc. Or going out to the park, museum, farm, library, playgroups, forest schools, national trusts, soft play, meeting nanny friends etc.
-Lunchtime + nap
-Tidy round, cook, children's washing
-Picking up the eldest from school
-After school activities or homework at home/go the the park/library etc
-Prepare and feed their evening meal
-Tidy round and go home

Susan has been a nanny to our two boys for several years now. We have never looked back-Susan has been the perfect nanny for us and so much more.

She is reliable, kind, caring and most importantly, our two boys love her. She organises great activities for our boys to enjoy- arts and craft, days out, help with their reading and writing, playing board games, singing and general fun! She has also helps us with cooking during the week which is a massive help. Her degree also means she has lots of experience and expertise to draw on to monitor their their development.

I recommend her unreservedly- you will not find a better nanny!
