My Experience

As a qualified teacher having taught for over two decades, I've developed a wealth of experience in the State and Independent sectors. Most recently, I was Subject Leader for Mathematics and Assessment in the pre-prep school I worked at full time in Epsom. I maintained an excellent reputation with colleagues, and parents found me amenable - a good listener with an ability to action change and work alongside them to help their son or daughter. Having moved house and needing more flexibility, I currently work as a supply teacher in local schools around Caterham and as a tutor with children in Reception to Year 4.

Teaching children aged 4 to 9 (Reception to Year 4) is a great passion of mine. Many people say I have a natural ability to relate to children and adults and put them at ease. Working with families and not just the child, is an integral ingredient to success. My positive, calm style of teaching, which is injected with humour, has enabled me to nurture and encourage many young children to reach their potential and foster a love of learning and greater self-confidence. I have high, yet realistic expectations, believing that if children feel confident and have been taught the appropriate skills, they can make excellent personal development and achieve first-rate results. Children I have tutored have experienced significant success and made very good progress leading to school awards for improvement and/or achievement. Praise is regularly given for deserved effort or attainment.
Learning is child-centred, age-appropriate and involves a mixture of practical activities and formal recording on paper. Each session is tailor-made for an individual. Whether the child is already a proficient learner who needs challenging and extending, or a learner who needs a boost of confidence, gentle nurturing, and revision of the basics, I design an individual program to suit him or her. I can help with all aspects of maths and literacy.

Much of my client base is from word of mouth. Clients travel to me in Chaldon, near Caterham on the Hill, where lessons are taught in a wonderful home classroom.

Catherine has been tutoring both my children for a few weeks now. My Qualifications

BA with QTS (qualified teaching status) 2:1
20+ years experience in schools and as a personal private tutor.

My Availability

Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3:45-7:15pm

My Fees

• Tutoring from £28.00 per hour

The initial 1:1 one-hour taster lesson is a one-off payment of £45.

If you feel that you would like to book further lessons, these are organised in school half-termly blocks and payable upfront. There are approximately 6 lessons per half term.
£45 per hour for 1:1 tuition
£28.00 per hour for small group tuition (maximum of 3 children per group)

Holiday lessons are also available; days, times and number of sessions are flexible.
