My Summary
About Me
Hi. I’ve been a childminder in Trowbridge since 1993 and I’ve been graded as ‘Outstanding in all areas’ by Ofsted on my last two Early Years inspection reports in 2009 and 2015 (Ofsted Registration Number: 145477).
It is important that parents feel comfortable with my setting, where children are seen as individuals and are offered continuity of care, which is as close as possible to being at home. Children are welcomed into a warm and stimulating environment, and I always encourage a settling-in period for new children.
Many of the children I have looked after have come from personal recommendations.
I live with my husband next to the Broadmead estate in Trowbridge. The property is approximately 5 minutes walk from Walwayne Court School, over a small bridge and through a green residential area with footpaths to the school. John of Gaunt school is again only 5 minutes walk in the opposite direction.
I feel children learn best through physical and creative play, which helps them to develop both emotionally and socially, and enables them to develop the skills needed for the future. Children in my care learn through a mixture of planned and child-initiated activities, which gives them the opportunity to develop language, literacy and numeracy skills, and prepares them for future learning, especially starting school. I involve parents in this process to ensure the best possible outcomes for the children.
I encourage and support the children’s emotional development so that they grow in confidence and self-esteem. I believe it is important for children to feel at ease while in my care, so that they have a strong sense of security and well-being.
I have a robust knowledge of safeguarding issues, so children will remain extremely safe in my care. I also maintain rigorous risk assessments to help monitor the safety of the children whether this is at my home or when we are enjoying outdoor activities.
My Experience
As an experienced childminder, I am aware that children have different needs and abilities, and I use activities to help support their development and encourage them to be inquisitive and to ask questions. If they are too young to speak, I talk to them about the activity we are doing, and repeat words they are trying to say.
I provide a variety of play equipment and materials for the children to make a free choice in their activities, and look for opportunities to record the child’s progress. We enjoy many activities outside of the home including local toddler groups, soft play centres, library events, local parks and National Trust properties, and we often enjoy picnics when the weather is good.
I try to plan and promote activities that will encourage good social behaviour, and give the children experiences aimed at developing their independence, in readiness for nursery and school. Similar to home, we use simple house rules to make sure all children play well together, and they are rewarded with stickers for their efforts and good behaviour.
I’m proud to display all my children’s work for the parents to see, and the children often receive lovely comments especially after we have spent some time on a particular topic. I always praise the children for their efforts and talk to them about their work and achievements.
I encourage the children to:
Enjoy their successes and achievements
Develop good behaviour and appreciate the needs of others
Make a positive contribution
Understand being healthy
Develop skills for the future
Learn how to be safe
