My Summary
About Me
I was a head teacher, and teacher of English, Business Studies and Life Skills as well as beginners' French for several years. I now reside permanently in the UK.
I have taught in South Africa most of my life but have taught in the UK previously. My husband and I are both British citizens and are living in Chartham, Canterbury.
I believe children can learn so much more, and faster, when taught individually as one can appeal to the individual who is normally much more willing and able to learn when removed from the group who sometimes act unacceptably(especially if they are teenagers!) as they try to impress the rest of the group.I feel that reserved learners really benefit when they can learn on their own away from loud, more dominant learners.
However, the right small group can provide a learning dynamic that can be very beneficial for many learners.
I believe the learning experience should be interactive, exciting and fun.
All three of my own children have done well both personally and academically. My eldest is a much loved teacher, my second has completed an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and works in Whitstable and my youngest is a registered dietician who completed a research masters degree part-time and works full-time for the NHS. All three are well-balanced, productive members of society, which is always what I aim to achieve with all the learners I have taught over the years.
I practised law for a few years before going into education seriously and have found education more rewarding personally.
My Experience
I have taught for over thirty years, at primary, senior and tertiary levels, but mostly at senior level.
I founded St Barnabas, based on the principle of encouragement, tweny three years ago. St Barnabas has developed into a flourishing school where learners are happy and successful. The school has won numerous awards for consistently good results and is fully accredited as an independent school in South Africa. Not many independent school in South Africa can claim this.
I have a broad, classical education and can teach most subjects if I have sufficient resources and time to prepare, but prefer teaching English(at any level).
I have helped several pupils pass the 11plus Kent tests (English,Math,Verbal and Non- Verbal Reasoning ) and enjoyed working with primary school pupils.
