My Experience
I am an enthusiastic and hardworking individual who loves working with a variety of people of all ages but especially children. From early teens I began working with children through Sunday school, creche and holiday clubs. During these holiday clubs I was involved in working with children from less affluent areas, organizing fun and engaging activities. From this I developed a passion for working with children and knew I wanted to do this in my career. In my last year of school I volunteered at a local Primary school twice a week which i loved and gave me the desire to teach. Throughout this time I was involved in a number of after school activities such as gymnastics, dancing, guitar and saxophone lessons. These taught me diligence in perfecting my craft and were all a creative outlet for me during my studies. I was involved in a variety of dramas and sketches, which I loved doing and I’ve take the skills of drama and used them in my teaching. In my last year of school I went on a trip to Romania to run holiday clubs, visit the elderly and do practical jobs for those in the area. This was a great experience of working with others and learning about those in different cultures.
At the age of 17 I moved to Edinburgh for University, which was a time for me to mature and learn not only academically but also in my personal life. I have been involved in leading and planning lessons for Sunday school since my first year of University. I have also been involved in numerous church events and University events. This allowed me to meet a variety of new people and develop good social skills. I would also say I am an inclusive person and I try make those on the outside feel part of something. In my 2nd year at University I was part of the cheerleading team. This involved a lot of dedication, high energy and a positive spirit whilst working in collaboration with the team members. I loved performing and I was able to take these skills to a Teaching placement where I ran a cheerleading and dance group. In my 4th year of Uni I did some volunteering for a charity called Mary's meals which provides children across the world with one meal a day in a place of education- all sustainable, locally sourced and made by those in the community. I spoke at school assemblies and this grew my confidence in public speaking. I also spent a week in the refugee camp in Calais. This gave me the ability to communicate with those of different languages and provided me an insight into the traumatic events that people go through. I developed a real passion for social justice from this and it influenced my final years dissertation, analyzing how policy affected refugees in education. I Since then I have been involved in a variety of events to support refugees. My 3rd year of University was spent on placement which gave me an insight to the reality of being a teacher and the need for being organised and prepared. I taught a class with very challenging behaviour which taught me to be calm but firm and gave me a persevering attitude despite it being quite difficult at times. I was also very involved in the school community and developed positive relationships with the staff and the pupils. In the summer of 2018 I went to Uganda for a month to work for a locally run NGO that supported children with additional support needs. I loved the warmth and openness of the people and the laid back culture. I was able to bring my teaching skills and knowledge to support these children and children in a local school. Despite the language barrier we were able to communicate using gestures, signs and facial expressions. I developed a wonderful relationship with these children and they hold a very special place in my heart. This year whilst teaching I hosted kids alpha at church which gave me more experience of speaking in public. I also had to be fun and exciting so all the children would join in with the games and activities.
I worked in a behavior base from 2019- the beginning of 2020 which really grew my confidence and skills in supporting challenging behavior. The key thing I learnt was to stay calm and non reactive but make sure everyone else involved was safe. I then returned to Uganda for 6 months to continue my work at the community center
From 2020-2024 I worked as a teacher in a SEN school. I loved this job and learnt so much about implementing different strategies and resources to support learners with additional needs. Seeing the children make holistic progress was a highlight of mine, especially being able to support their communication skills. I developed strong bonds with the staff and children in the school, ran the choir and collaborated with other teachers, parents and outside agencies to provide the best support for learners. This job has been a highlight of my career so far but knew when I left it was the right time.
I moved down South in November to work for a church as a youth worker. This mainly involves supporting kids in church on a Sunday but running various youth projects throughout the week to support the local community. This involves having high energy but I'm loving building relationships and getting to know the young people
