About Me

Hello,

My name is Amber, I am 30 and I was born and raised in North London.

I have 7 years nanny experience, ranging from babies to teenagers, and I have looked after both boys and girls.

I am an honours graduate in Education Studies, have a Masters Degree in Children’s Developmental Psychology and I am currently training as a Child, Adolescent and Family Psychotherapist.

I am currently seeking a 3-day nanny role to ideally start from September. More or less 30 hours per week.

My interest in human development led me to study Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology at the Anna Freud Centre and UCL. The Masters taught me a lot, covering content on newborn babies up to the age of adolescents. I have learnt how children develop physically, socially and cognitively, and what is fundamental in aiding positive development. This experience has added to my understanding of appropriate development, and has helped me to understand what can hinder healthy development for children.

In 2021 I was accepted onto a very selective course to train as a Child, Adolescent and Family Psychotherapist. Training as a therapist greatly enhances a nanny's effectiveness in childcare by equipping them with advanced skills in understanding and supporting children's emotional and psychological needs. The training has enabled me to recognise and address behavioural issues, developmental delays, and emotional distress with appropriate interventions. It has assisted my capacity to create a nurturing and safe environment that promotes healthy emotional development, using therapeutic techniques to foster positive behaviour and resilience. Additionally, the training has provided me with an expertise in communication that helps build strong, trusting relationships with both children and parents, ensuring a more holistic approach to childcare that addresses both physical and emotional well-being.

I opted to do my Undergraduate Degree in Education Studies. The course presented a rigorous overview of educational policies and processes along with the historical, political and cultural contexts that underpin the approaches to the implementation of education and skills in the twenty-first century. I gained an understanding of the key features of education in the UK, and the curriculum. I have many years of experience working in a variety of different schools, including State Schools, Preparatory Schools and SEN Schools.

Since completing my first Master’s, I have worked as a nanny for multiple families. These experiences have offered me intimate understandings of working with children and families on a much deeper and emotional level. I am aware of daily emotional turmoil that can go on, in and out of the home and educational setting, and it has provided me with a holistic insight into the correlation between mental health, development and environment. With this in mind, I have thoroughly enjoyed helping the children I’ve worked with regulate and reflect on their emotions, whilst practise healthier ways of communicating their feelings.

Following a successful placement at a Special Needs School, I was offered a paid job there in 2015 and again in 2016. All the children had severe Autism and Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties. It takes much longer to identify when a child with PMLD is experiencing mental health problems. None of the children in my class were fully mobile, nor able to communicate with words. Many of these children had mental health problems and were unable to communicate their suffering verbally. From conversing with my colleagues and analysing any repetitive behaviour I began to pick up when a child was having an “absence” or behaving emotionally detached. My time at that school gave me invaluable skills, such as: patience, flexibility, resilience, the ability to remain calm under pressure and most of all empathy, all of which would be transferable to this nanny role. From working there, I expanded both my verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

I am a happy, independent and organised person with a good sense of humour. I am empathetic, patient and sensitive to the needs of others. I am an excellent communicator and get on easily with people of all ages and abilities. I am honest and ethical and always complete any job undertaken. I have always adored children and have been fortunate to work with children of many different age groups and abilities in various settings both in the U.K. and Overseas.

I enjoy travelling and experiencing new places. I spend much of my free time visiting the theatre, music concerts, art galleries and museums. I have a wide interest in cultural activities and would enjoy passing on and sharing these interests to children. I understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and enjoy walking, swimming and going to the gym.

Acting as a liaison between the parents and other household staff.

- Supporting their academia (planning lessons around the general curriculum and external subjects, assisting with homework and musical instrument practise, planning projects, organising educational activities)

- Supporting their emotional needs (weekly individual 1:1 checkins, practising mindfulness and gratitude daily, providing a safe space to talk through any emotions, helping them to regulate their emotions and practise healthier ways of communicating, helping manage and problem-solve sibling/parental arguments)

- Other responsibilities: (regular meetings with the parents to discuss the children's week, general wellbeing and any academic updates, organising and supervising playdates, organising arts and crafts and fun indoor/outdoor activities/trips, playing games, sports and fantasy role play, planning and cooking meals, food shopping, school runs, organising and taking them to any appointments)

Role: I worked with a class of 7 children aged between 7 and 10 years with Autism and Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties. I worked in their After School Club with children aged between 4 and 11 years. I also worked in their summer play-scheme with children aged between 3 and 11 years. In order for me to have worked with such vulnerable children who had such severe needs, fundamental skills were required. Skills that include: patience, flexibility, the ability to remain calm under pressure and most of all empathy. None of the children in my class were able to speak, some were able to make noises to communicate, and others could only scream or cry. None of the children were fully mobile and some were completely paralysed.

Responsibilities: Daily physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and music therapy to effectively improve the children’s physical and mental wellbeing. Assisting daily epileptic fits within the class (Epilepsy trained). Feeding multiple children via tubes (Gastrostomy trained). Trained in Suctioning, Toileting and Manual Handling. Teaching and promoting structure to manage symptoms. Continually observing the class and keeping regular notes. Assisting the children with their learning of the curriculum. Weekly meetings with the other staff members in my class to talk through each child's week and/ any medical updates. Reading to the children.
