My Summary
About Me
I have experience babysitting teenagers and younger primary school children, and have worked in primary school setting as a primary school teacher for over 2 years. I have taught children aged 4-11. I have also worked with children with SEND and SEMH.
My Experience
Studying an Education degree has resulted in a continuous drive and focus upon developing children’s education and development. The course has provided me with valuable awareness of the strengths and weaknesses in my own pedagogical practices and an indication of the national problems within education. This has motivated me to teach. I wish to provide an education to children and aid the beginning of the ongoing process of their educational development.
The children in my first placement in a SEMH schools had a range of complex needs. I was fortunate enough to be placed in a Year 4 class with 9 children. I was worked with a young team and had an excellent mentor, who allowed me to plan and deliver lessons through creative curriculum planning and taught me how crucial it is to find your own voice as a teacher. With this support I was able to deliver lessons to the children about empathy, emotions and friendship, all crucial qualities the children require to maintain secure attachments and healthy relationships. The children, meanwhile, taught me about the importance of relationships, and the responsibility of being a role model. I began to enrol on modules concerning adverse childhood experiences, attachment theory and special educational needs. However, at first, I struggled to comprehend the children’s violent and disruptive behaviour. I found myself embarrassed by my lack of experience in dealing with this category of children and safeguarding issues. This motivated me to write my dissertation on; how well do teachers feel prepared in dealing with safeguarding issues? As, I personally feel the bridge between policy making and implementation here is an issue many practitioners face.
Following this placement, I returned to a local primary school focusing particularity on Key Stage 1. This sparked my motivation to teach KS1. My aspirations to help children get the most out of their education flourishes. I enjoy teaching children the basics of numeracy and literacy through interactive means. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to run a sensory play group for children with additional needs, further improving my knowledge of this area.
