Mandarin (Ages 3-4, 5-7, 8-10)
At Marina Bay, children have the opportunity to learn the Mandarin language and Chinese culture in a fun, immersive environment. Our dynamic, native-speaking teachers use a communicative approach and lots of gestures, games and songs so everyone participates in the fun. Immersed in Mandarin, students engage in games and activities, and learn through music, movement, drama and art. Your child will learn useful everyday vocabulary and functional language such as describing actions and expressions.
Art (Ages 3-5,5-7,8-10)
In our program, your will child explores art as a process. They develop their artistic expression using various mediums, including paint, collage, crayons, pencils, and textiles. They also learn about basic elements of art, including shapes, lines, textures, and styles, with study of various famous artists to support these concepts.
STEM (Ages 3-4, 5-7, 8-10)
The overarching principles of science, technology, engineering and maths permeate our offering, as we believe strongly that children learn to “decode” their world and giving them a strong understanding of how things work in that world enables them to develop the problem solving skills required to creatively meet the demands that their life and the future will bring. Children will acquire maths once they have understood the relationship between quantity (the concrete) and numeral (the abstract). All early maths material is designed to achieve a deep understanding of quantity. Once that has been achieved, further material allows the child to associate the abstract numeral, say “3”, with its concrete equivalent: three counters, three stones. Many of the activities are designed to be done collaboratively; practising addition by setting up a shop or a bank, with the activity centred on role-play, making it lots of fun.
For 5-7, 8-10 group students will enhance their maths Core Skills through guidance and practice,
-Sharpening their core math skills in
-Subtraction, addition, multiplication & division
-Decimals, fractions & percentages
-Geometry, shape & algebra
We will also incorporate Applied math skills
-Word problems & problem-solving
-Money, calendars & telling the time
-Data handling, probability & reasoning
WHAT IS THE MONTESSORI METHOD?
The Montessori Method is alternative education that protects and expands the absorbent mind of children through uninterrupted work time. Our program honors this method, which prepares children for rigorous academics and nurtures their innate creativity.
HOW DO THE STUDENTS SPEND THEIR TIME?
Our Montessori afterschool and weekend curriculum offers children activities that build practical life skills, determination, and understanding. With these tools, our students spend time using their hands to explore their surroundings, engaging with peers through academic work and play, and receiving individualized lessons from loving teachers.
The proprietor of Marina Bay afterschool and weekend centre has years of experience being an educator in Hong Kong, New York and London. She worked as an 11+ and 7+ prep tutor during her undergrads majoring BSC Education in Psychology. She was a Mandarin teacher at Thomas's Kensington, Thomas's Battersea, and ran afterschool Chinese clubs at Garden House School Chelsea, The Acorn Nursery Holland Park.
At MB we believe a whole child approach, encouraging resilient, capable, confident and self-assured children is our utmost mission.
