My Experience
Working with kids on a one to one basis as well as in groups has given me a great insight into children's individual growth, needs, personalities.
One of my main responsibilities in this role was to be a one to one pupil support two days a week for a pupil who attended the school as part of a shared placement with a complex needs provision. This pupil had Down's Syndrome. As one of their key adults, I knew it was important I found out as much as I could about Down's Syndrome to ensure I was doing everything I could to support this pupil. This pupil had an individual daily timetable and routine and it was my responsibility to ensure she was supported in engaging with these tasks. This has shown me the importance of working with the class teacher and feeding back about how the pupil engaged with the task so that we could adapt her activities accordingly. Working with this pupil was a particularly rewarding experience for me and highlighted to me the importance of developing a wider understanding of each pupil through dialogue with staff and getting to know their wider interests. All of this helped me to build a relationship of mutual trust and respect. - On the other three days, my main responsibility was to support Primary 3 and Primary 4 classes. Initially, I engaged in dialogue with the class teachers about any specific needs of children within the class, what they expected of me and how I could be of the most help. In the Primary 3 class there was a range of friendship difficulties and children arguing with each other. After reading about a restorative approach, which the school use, I began to use this language and strategy to support the children in getting back to a place where they were ready to learn. By recognizing these situations and dealing with them early, I was able to deescalate children and help the teacher to keep the class engaged in their learning. In the Primary 4 class, the class teacher spoke with me about particular children with Additional support for Learning needs and ways in which I could support these children specifically. I began working with these children within their class and in small group settings. I would support them with their tasks by ensuring instructions were clear, modelling how to do the activity, recognizing when they needed a break, giving regular praise for effort and discussing with the class teacher how they found the tasks. It was important to me that I was using all my time to be of the most help therefore, after discussing with support for learning staff I started taking children out for daily reading and reinforcing phonics. - In terms of my responsibilities across the whole school, I was responsible for supervising children at break and lunch time. This experience highlighted to me the importance of working collegiately with the team of learning assistants. Through effective communication and working as a team to take turns doing different roles, we were able to offer different activities to the children and ensure the health and safety of all. Another key responsibility I had in this role is to ensure I follow the schools policies and procedures. For example, I engaged in dialogue and observed staff using the whole school behavior policy in practice and was then able to adopt this myself. In addition to this, it was important that I quickly became familiar with the schools Child Protection procedure, knew where all appropriate forms were to fill out and who these must be passed on to. I also ensured that I quickly got to know as many children and their teachers as I could. As a result, if I was ever concerned that a pupil did not seem themselves in the playground I could go and let their teacher know. This experience of working as a learning assistant was invaluable in developing my knowledge and skills of working with a wide range of people to help get it right for every child. It was a highly enjoyable and rewarding experience.
