Hi!
I am 28 and currently work as a Deputy Manager in a residential children’s home. Since leaving university 4 years ago I have worked with children and young people and their families who are known to social services, and young people who live in residential care settings. I have worked with children of all ages from new born babies to 17 year olds. (I can give more information about this in a later conversation. This also means I have an enhanced DBS check).
Although I mostly work with teenagers at the moment, I loveee working with the little ones! I love that when you work with younger children every day is different even when maintaining routines. I like to add variety to the day by looking for new activities to complete with the children both in-house and outside and can always add some educational aspects to the fun (this is something I do in my current role which I refer to as innovations). I’m not afraid to be silly with the children and get down to their level, all while role modelling and maintaining a safe environment.
My Experience
Prior to working in this sector, when I was studying I worked as a carer for the elderly and I also babysat for a local family every week while the Mother went to work. The children were 2 and 4 at the time however sadly this was cut short due to covid! Duties were to play with the children and keep them entertained, cook their dinner and get them ready for bed.
I have little cousins that are 8 years old who I have spent a lot of time with since they were born. I have completed work experience in a local pre-school and I have volunteered in Thailand at a pre-school helping the children and playing with them just as you would in an English pre-school but with a language barrier. When I was at school I also volunteered at a local outside activity centre called stubbers in which I helped children and young adults with disabilities engage in the activities. I have also worked in retail and administration/PA roles in the city.
My Qualifications
I have GCSE’s & A Levels.
Psychology degree - 1 (this has involved modules on child development)
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare - Ongoing
Level 4 Trauma Informed Practice for Children and Young People - Ongoing
My Availability
Evenings and weekends. I am also happy to book a day off of work during the week if required.
