About Me

My name is Carla and I have a great deal of experience with babies and children. I am a qualified paediatric nurse with over 12 years experience in intensive neonatal care. I’m also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant offering professional feeding guidance and support to families to achieve their feeding goals. I recognise that the role of a maternity nurse is as much about caring for a newborn child as it is educating and assisting new parents with their new responsibilities.

My Responsibilities involve:

- Assisting first time mothers to establish a good and gentle routine adequate for their baby. These routines were individually designed and tailored for each family, teaching parents about understanding the signs of when their baby needs to sleep and eat.
- Giving physical support to mothers who have had a C-section or for mothers who are suffering post-natal depression.
- Supporting mothers with breastfeeding; specifically helping with the initial challenges of positioning and attaching their baby. Plus, giving advice on how to express and conserve milk.
- Supporting mothers who are bottle feeding by presenting correct sterilisation and effective bottle-feeding methods to ensure the baby feeds in the most effective way, and that both of them feel comfortable during feeding and bonding periods.
- Teaching and carrying out duties related to the physical and emotional aspects of caring for a new-born infant; including cleaning the baby, bathing, dressing, settling, comforting and taking out for walks in the pram.
- Teaching parents the best way to massage to their babies.
- Teaching parents about safety and hygiene around the baby.
- Educating parents on how to manage common ailments such as jaundice, reflux, and colic.
- Involving fathers and siblings and helping them to bond with the new-born baby.

My Experience

- 12 years experience in intensive neonatal care
- Caring for new-born babies with specific needs; including twins, neonates with ailments including an 8-week-old boy with a colostomy bag, a 4-week-old girl with hydrocephalus and 4-week-old premature boy twins, one of which was in palliative care.
