My Summary
Highly Experienced Norland Nanny
About Me
I am not presently looking for a position.
Hi, my name is Kate Ferguson. I have 32 years of experience working with children.
I began my childcare career training at the prestigious Norland College. I initially worked as a nanny, moving on to working in a private day nursery, then I changed direction and worked for a training company for 11 years, teaching and assessing NVQ qualifications in childcare for nursery nurses, nannies and childminders. I made the decision to go back into looking after children myself in order to spend more time with my own children, as I taught primarily at weekends.
As I taught childcare for many years, I have an extensive understanding of child development and learning. I pride myself on providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children, catering to their individual needs and planning interesting and exciting activities to help them progress.
For the last 12 years I have been working as a registered childminder in Loughton, however now, as my two boys are adults, I am returning into the world of nannying.
I have qualifications in food and nutrition and enjoy planning and cooking healthy nutritious meals for the children, catering for any special dietary needs.
My Experience
I graduated from the Norland College and worked as a nanny for a family of five children - two sets of twins. One of the children had mild cerebral palsy. My next job was working as a senior nursery nurse in a large day nursery, I spent five happy years here, before moving on to teaching and assessing childcare qualifications for 'Smart Training' a private training provider
In my current position as a registered childminder, I follow the Ofsted and EYFS guidance to provide high-quality childcare to children from different families at my home. I manage the differing needs of up to 12 children at a time of various ages between 2 months and 12 years, providing before, after school and full day care. Within our daily routine I plan activities according to the children's ages, using their current interests and stages of development as starting points.
We regularly go on trips to places in the local area and use the forest on our doorstep to explore and walk the dog. Menus are planned around dietary needs and preferences whilst encouraging children to taste and explore new foods. Whilst in this role, I have also undertaken many babysitting and night nanny duties for families and had children stay for overnight care.
My Qualifications
I have the following qualifications:
NNEB
The Norland Diploma - Distinction
Post Natal Maternity Nurse care level 4
D32/33/34 (teaching, assessing and internal verifier qualifications)
CYPOP5 (Understand how to set up a home-based childcare service)
Up to date First Aid qualification
Health and Hygiene certificate
Safeguarding children certificate
Previous to attending The Norland College I attended the Eastbourne College of Food and Fashion where I gained qualifications in nutrition, catering and cordon bleu cookery.

Kate Ferguson is more than a childminder. Or maybe child minding just doesn’t mean what a lot of people think it means. She is not just ‘minding’ my children. She’s giving them experiences that they would not get in any other childcare provision. She’s giving them the attention one can usually only expect from a close relative. Like a trusted aunt, who just so happens to be brilliant, funny, intuitive, emotionally intelligent, resourceful and a fountain of knowledge. One that enhances your life in infinite, immeasurable ways.
I feel more confident in the learning experiences my children have with Kate than I would in the experiences they would inevitably have in a formal learning environment. And I have a good idea about those, as both my husband and I are primary school teachers.
They bake; they create, they practice all sorts of skills; they walk in the Forest with Frank (Kate’s dog); they go to Kate’s allotment; they dine out; they celebrate and learn about important and diverse festivals and current events, and such a variety of excursions that I can’t even begin to remember a fraction of them. She keeps them so busy, engaged and entertained they don’t have time to miss me.
That in itself is worth its weight in gold. Especially as my son was so attached to me before he started at Kate’s (at about 14 months old) that I was a very stressed out parent, wondering how on Earth I was going to cope with going to work. He was not happy at all with a previous childminder, becoming almost a different child. And that childminder told me I should stop breastfeeding him cos his attachment to me made her job more difficult. I knew that would only make matters worse. Needless to say I moved him to Kate’s as soon as I could and I’ve counted my blessings every day since. And strangely enough he thrived at Kate’s from day one, despite my still breastfeeding him!)
He is now my 4 year old and has just started reception, only going to Kate’s before and after school. After his first few days he lamented that his younger sister (who has just turned two and loves it as much as he does) would be having more fun at Kate’s than he would at school because Kate has more toys, and at school they only have four. 😂
She also teaches them loads. And I find it compliments perfectly my own ethos on teaching children. They have fun, they do amazing activities and they learn without even realising it. She’s a natural teacher with boundless energy. And thankfully fills the holes in my own abilities as a parent. (I do not have boundless energy, or know much about cooking or growing things. One quick example: My son came home telling me the recipe for mayonnaise. He would likely never learn something like that from me.)
But I don’t need to stress about my shortcomings cos, although they say “It takes a village to raise a child,” Kate embodies all of the villagers rolled into one. She literally has that impact. And for someone with no real help around, I now don’t feel that my child is massively missing out on that side of things.
I can’t really do justice to the effect Kate’s super human child knowledge, understanding and connection has had on our family. But suffice it to say that coming from someone who would move the earth for the happiness of her children, I know I couldn’t get a better ‘mummy number two’ than Kate Ferguson. (My son’s own words.)
I will continue to count my lucky stars that I found someone outside of my family (which I was convinced was impossible) who I now would choose to look after my children over and above my own family, simply because I have more trust and faith in her than I do anyone.
Even my own mother - who I originally really wanted to look after my children when I went to work, has said to me she couldn’t possibly give them all the experiences that Kate has. And I can only agree and thank the universe for working in mysterious ways.
She’s another level of educator. And does THE most important job in the world. I recognise it and I hope others will.
She’s beyond outstanding because there really is no one out there like her.
For me it’s about so many of her qualities. But I suppose if I had to encapsulate how I feel in one word it would be ‘Trust’. I trust that my children are safe; happy; engaged; socialising; thriving and learning the coolest things.
And that is literally priceless.

I have two girls, aged 10 and 4 and my girls have been with Kate for almost a year. Kate is a really wonderful woman. She is super-organised and effiecient and a really positive person to be around, (even if you are an adult!). If I ever need to switch days for work, Kate is always flexible.
When my youngest started she was still doing a few hours at nursery. Kate would support the curriculum the nursery followed, ie focus on the same things (letters, colours, themes etc) at home which really helps reinforce what they are learning. It's great to know their development is being supported through play. Every day I would get a written review of how the day had been, what she'd eaten, what she'd played with etc, goodness knows how she had time... It's really reassuring to read all this when you get home at the end of the day.
Now both my girls are at school, they go to Kate's after school and have a wonderful time. They do so much more with Kate than I ever get around to doing with my own kids after a school run! They have both become quite attached to her, it's lovely. Every week there's boxes of stuff turning up from Amazon so the kids have a massive range of projects to get stuck into.... whether its the caterpillars or tadpoles, Thanksgiving celebrations, baking cakes, arts and crafts, discos in the living room, sandpits full of rice in the kitchen – there is always loads of activities. The kitchen walls are full of lovely work the kids have produced. Plus there is a mountain of toys!
Kate's own kids are lovely boys, and always joining in with what ever is going on and playing with the little ones. I know I am lucky because there's not many people like Kate around, she's a one-in-a-million. A really amazing childminder. I would be more than happy to recommend her to anyone looking to leave their children in a fun, secure, loving and fun environment.
