I am an honest, enthusiastic ,energetic and hard working person that is driven to succeed and pride myself on putting 100% effort into everything I do. I’m an ex professional and semi professional footballer and also a national league referee, I’m full of energy and support for any family that may need it. I am very motivated and committed to working with people by supporting them in their lives.
My Experience
I’ve worked within school, educational and nursery environments throughout my career, starting from an EYFS room lead, right up to a head of alternative provision at a high school.
My experience with working with people with children and young people , comes in many different forms, which I believe has helped me develop my knowledge, skills and confidence to approach and work with any age or ability. This includes my ability to work in a team with co workers and cohesively thrive in our area of work. Despite seeming a young candidate, my experience speaks for itself to show that given the chance, this is a role I can for fill to this full potential & really excel in, not only this, i believe this is a perfect role for me when it comes to working in an enjoyable and happy environment From young child, I played at grass roots football and I feel it is important to give back to the community. Therefore, this led me to volunteer as a football coach for children aged between 11-17, which taught me the importance of reflection. By gaining an understanding of young peoples differing needs and how they learn, it is important as a coach to reflect on the content and styles of my teaching, in order to make sure I get the most out of each individual. This was also to ensure that my sessions were adapted in the best possible way to enable the needs and abilities of each individual, so they felt included and involved. This not only developed their skills on the pitch, it taught them the need for teamwork and built on their confidence and self-esteem, which I feel is a huge importance in regards to supporting children and young people not
only in education but in day to day life. I also played semi-professional football with Bolton Wanderers up until last year and I am aware of the importance of sport and exercise to support emotional wellbeing. I currently referee within the South Manchester and Timperley League where I referee games with children aged between 7-17, male and female. The refereeing course involved intense training over a month & included completing a Manchester FA safeguarding course, which enhanced my understanding of safeguarding as a whole. This enables me to develop my understanding of young people’s challenging behaviours and ability to remain calm in volatile within situations. I am consistent and ensure I use clear communication skills when explaining the complex information around decisions being made, which defuses the situations and enables the children and their parents to gain an understanding of the rules and boundaries which in turn allows the children to continue to enjoy the game. Furthermore, communicating and explaining the rules helps promote stronger team working skills for the children and how their actions impact the whole team and how they act matters, it also allows me to maintain my engagement in the game and remain motivated in order to provide an exciting start to the day for each individual. I also volunteered at Camp America in the summer of 2018, where I worked for three months, looking after young people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities and needs. This supported my development in a variety of different ways; I trained as a lifeguard and improved upon my safety awareness and the importance of observation and I was assessing children’s abilities to swim and placing them in the correct categories in line with their abilities. I enhanced my communication skills with children whose first language was not English and learned to identify body language, which helped me to see when children/young people needed additional support without them having to ask for this. I am a friendly person and used my personality to develop relationships with the children, which included my humour, I also led classes with groups of children that could range from 7-18 children, aged between 11-17, where I taught swimming, paddle boarding and football, which increased my leadership skills. I was allocated a cabin where I stayed with a colleague and we were responsible for a group of 15 boys, whom ages ranged from 8-12 years. I was trained in the camp’s safeguarding procedures and developed experience of relationship building whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries. Supporting the children was a huge task during this time, whether this be helping to build their confidence, support emotional wellbeing when they felt homesick, help resolve conflicts between one another and how to build on their self-esteem, overcome barriers and work effectively as a team. I also learned to work effectively in a team and understand the importance of confidentiality and sought support with the appropriate staff (in lines with the camp’s safeguarding policy). However, when matters did not need to be shared I worked collaboratively with a child by using a restorative approach, of which we discussed the issue and came up with strategies to overcome the challenge. There were also times during the day where there were no planned activities or the weather would not permit the planned activity and I would have to use my own initiative and my problem solving skills to come up with an impromptu activity to keep the children occupied. For example, we would tend to focus on different skills such as team-building, collaboration and turn taking to enhance the children’s skills within the different areas. Ive previously at CHHS, This has been a specific challenge this year as 15 out of the 26 children have additional needs whether this be behaviour based, social emotional, mental health or Autism. I have found this experience to be challenging and rewarding and improved my ability to be flexible and positive when working with the students. It has extended on my team working skills and has highlighted the importance of clear communication between a team and how this is vital to ensure a stimulating, positive and safe environment is provided for each child, regardless of their needs. This experience has enabled me to further develop my understanding of safeguarding and communication and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
My role as a head of alternative provision has shown my ability to work with parents and their children to increase the skills, confidence and abilities of all family members to live their daily lives in a positive and safe way.
