About Me

Hello, and thanks for reading! I am a qualified early years teacher with a Masters degree in education. I have worked with children aged from 0-16 in an educational and developmental support capacity for the past 13 years. Many of the children I have worked with have struggled with schooling/attending an educational setting due to having ASD and/or pathological demand avoidance.

I began private tutoring as an EFL teacher when living in China, teaching English (literature and conversation practice) and cooking. I started working as a private tutor in the UK after qualifying as an Early Years Teacher and completing my Masters degree.

I worked for a year with a very bright and talented teenager who was unable to attend school due to her ASD. I was teaching her art and art history. She has now gone on to study an online college art course at GCSE level.

I have worked with primary school aged children whose parents want to increase their English and maths levels. Generally speaking, our studies end up being far broader than this, as I tend to follow a very holistic approach. In one case, the student, who was 7, had English as a second language, so much of the focus was on extending his vocabulary. We also did a lot of work on creative writing, building on extending and broadening his written answers. He also needed help with rules of conversation (i.e. having a conversation rather than just talking at someone about a particular interest), projection (understanding other people’s perspectives), and creative and critical thinking skills (problem solving and working with others to find a solution - designed to build a child’s intelligence through progressing independent, self-reflective and creative thought processes).

One of my current students has recently been diagnosed with autism, and may suffer from pathological demand avoidance, although as we have built up a good relationship over the past couple of years, the symptoms have lessened very considerably during our time together. Initially I was helping her with phonics, as she was behind at school. Over time I have worked with her on her reading, writing and numeracy, which are areas she has struggled with. I also focus on an area where she shows special talent, which is history. In addition we have worked on core areas such as conversation skills, social and emotional development and projection/empathy skills.

I have also recently started working with a 2 year old girl with autism, building on her communication, social and emotional/socialisation development, and resilience. Previously I also worked as a nanny to a little boy with autism, from the age of 1-3. He had communication and language issues and I worked with him a lot on this as well as helping him to develop his play skills.
