The central responsibility in all of my job roles outlined above has been to provide outstanding care for the children I work with; ensuring to always prioritise their physical, psychological and social safety and well-being above anything else. I have done this by curating environments that protect children from both physical and psychological harm (e.g not only ensuring the space is free from physical hazards, such as dangerous chemicals and sharp objects; but also ensuring the absence of microaggressions that may damage psychological well-being, such as inappropriate jokes, stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination). In addition, I provide care by catering for children’s basic needs, such as feeding, bathing, and dressing, whilst providing constant comfort, support and guidance.
I realise that the role of a Nanny / babysitter differs from other jobs in child care due to its deeply personalised and comprehensive nature. My Experience
My childcare experience includes over 1 year caring for children in a residential care setting (as a ‘Clinical & Therapy Assistant’); 1 year in the delivery of therapeutic input for children with a history of trauma and associated social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (as a ‘Speech & Language Assistant’); and over 2 years working with children in mainstream education and care settings (holding a range of roles including a Classroom Assistant for a Saturday School; Student Tutor; Early-Years practitioner). I am currently employed by an Early-Years Nursery in the UK, caring for children aged 0-5 years.
Whilst working in a residential care setting as a Clinical & Therapy Assistant, I worked both day and night shifts in the homes, supporting the children to implemment and maintain healthy daily routines. For example, I helped children develop consistent, healthy eating schedules by setting specific meal-times and providing education surrounding what foods are healthy / unhealthy. I also supported children to establish healthy sleeping routines by ensuring all electronic devices are switched off approximately 30 minutes before bedtime; and encouraging calming, offline activities, such as reading, journalling, or bathing.
Whilst working as an Early-Years practitioner, I have individually supported each child under my care to reach their full cognitive potential, by delivering educational activities tailored to their developmental stage and learning style, such as teaching children aged 2-3 years about the life span of caterpillars by using engaging visual aids and story-telling.
