My Experience
During the first year of my foundation apprenticeship, I completed a placement at Mount Esk Early Learning and Childcare Centre on a Tuesday afternoon. During the placement I gained valuable experience in working with children aged 3-5 years. My main responsibilities included supporting the children, encouraging independence at snack time, putting on jackets and shoes and hand washing. Storytelling and supporting the children in their play and learning. I used my friendly, playful nature to build trusting relationships with the children. During my placement I acted in a respectful manner towards the staff members. I asked questions about their experiences in order to learn and improve mine.
I have also volunteered at Newbattle Food, Fun and Sport Programme which involved getting to know and supporting vulnerable children and families. Within a short period, I was able to build trust and relationships to enable me to support children to engage in the activities offered, support mutual regulation and encourage self-regulation to actively participate in the programme.
My previous employment I was working as a Learning Assistant in a Primary School and I have improved some of my personal qualities such as being open-minded, nurturing, supportive, empathetic, patient, and selfless. My confidence has also grown and my experience of working with children and understanding of additional support needs has expanded. I have a better understanding of child development and supporting to overcome potential barriers children may face through day to day. This role challenges me to use my skills on a daily basis. I have the ability to adapt to situations/change, act calm in tricky situations, communicate with children, staff & parents and build relationships. I also enjoy continuing to improve my personal development by using restorative practices and attending training courses whenever possible.
