About Me
I am a mum to a delightful 6 month old boy (I accept I might be a little biased!), who will be about 11 months old by the time my husband and I require regular extra help in looking after him. I am a teacher in my other life and will be returning to work at the start of July 2025.
As new parents with our families far flung and who never experienced childcare outside of our families growing up, we are a little nervous about how to find the right person to trust with our boy and his additional medical needs.
As our baby gets older we want to encourage independence, curiosity, resilience and patience. We very much value kindness, compassion, humility, generosity and good humour and want to instil these in our son. It is also important to me that my child is shown how to be a lifelong learner and that he has an appreciation for language, music, art and the great outdoors (the latter will need some adjustments, due to his CF).
I am keen to work with someone with good experience that I might also learn from, strong communication and who understands and shares my concerns for my baby’s wellbeing.
My Requirements
Ideally we would be looking for term time only day care, perhaps with an occasional day a week during the holidays). Initially we may need full day care 3 days a week in July when I first return to work, but this will probably change to 4 shorter days a week from September. I do not know what days these will be for some time as it will depend on timetabling at my school, but I anticipate Tuesdays and Fridays as definite days I will be at work.
We need a provider with a strong commitment to learning about particular risks to a child with our son’s medical condition, cystic fibrosis, and a willingness to adapt to his needs. You can be introduced to the COAST team at Medway Maritime Hospital who will support us in teaching you to understand our boy’s needs. Due to the nature of CF, we will need to be informed early if you or any children in your care have respiratory viruses in case make alternative care arrangements, if necessary. Due to this we are also keen to find people who are willing to support on an ad hoc basis, to fill in for regular child care.
We are keen to have a bit of a run in time for our baby to become accustomed to a new care giver before I return to work. As we have no one else locally to call upon for childcare support, we are considering starting with a nanny for a couple of hours a week from as early as March.
