My Summary
About Me
Hi, I’m Sophie! I am currently pursuing an MPhil in Global and Area Studies at Merton College as a Rhodes Scholar. Originally from Moscow, I lived in Shanghai for five years before moving to my current home in the Adirondacks. I hold a BA from Columbia University in East Asian studies and mathematics. In my free time, I love taking walks (I've grown particularly fond of Godstow Abbey since moving to Oxford), reading, and attending concerts at the Sheldonian.
My Experience
I have tutored Chinese, Ukrainian, and Taiwanese students, ranging from elementary to college level, in English through the NGOs Project Rousseau and Window to the World. The tutoring was volunteer-based, so I was responsible for creating my own assignments, class materials, and assessments. I also have experience assisting elementary-aged students in NYC with after school tutoring in maths, English, and the natural sciences. As an undergrad, I provided admissions consulting and application support (i.e., brainstorming, (copy) editing, etc.) for Kazakh and Chinese high schoolers interested in US higher education. While my childcare experience has been mostly ad hoc and for family friends, I have over eight years of experience in hospitality and customer service. I was a maid and waitress/line-cook at my family's cafe-inn in Northern New York, and worked as a barista for three years in New York City at high-volume locations.
My Qualifications
Academic/Professional Qualifications: I hold a BA in East Asian Studies and mathematics. During my undergrad, I was co-Editor-in-Chief of Columbia University's undergraduate Slavic journal, and I conducted research at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs, several NGOs, and seven foreign policy think tanks, including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Brookings Institution, and Carnegie China. In all of these roles, I was responsible for meeting strict deadlines and providing documentative (i.e., proofreading, (copy) editing, fact-checking), translation, and research support. I have also completed a year of graduate coursework in the humanities and social sciences.
Domestic Qualifications: My family home is located in rural New York state, where I was a maid (on and off) at my family's inn for over 8 years. And so, I am comfortable navigating both household tasks (e.g., laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc.) and most yard work. I also have a driver's license and food handlers license. I grew up with dogs and rabbits and have experience cat sitting.
My Availability
I am quite flexible, as contact hours for my Oxford course are modest. Timetables have not been released yet, but my schedule will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
