About Me

The skills I have developed outside of education in previous employment including customer service, people skills and training support are all additional skills which would benefit me in the role of a KS1 teacher and tutor, helping me develop positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents.

I have been extremely professional throughout my PGCE year. My time management is very good and all planning and other expectations have been met appropriately. After forming very good professional relationships in schools, I became an integral part of the KS1 team in my first placement school. I formed good and very professional relationships with the staff team and have deployed other adults well in class to support the higher level of need in my class. I have engaged in a range of useful CPD, joined school visits and undertaken my share of duties around school, such as break duties and after school clubs. In addition to the expectations of my course, I have taken the opportunity to lead my PGCE cohort by taking on the role of lower course rep, representing the cohort in official meetings with the university.

My Experience

During my PGCE year, I have developed a good understanding of how children learn and various methods for understanding my pupils individual learning needs. I have had feedback noting that my lessons are well structured with relevant resources that are adapted to meet the wide variety of learning needs in the class. The time spent in my placements has given me a clear understanding of how learning should be structured, and which resources are required to support this, for a full class and individual pupils. I have taken the time to understand how to ensure new learning is modelled and received praise in being alert to children’s misconceptions in their understanding and ensured that these were addressed so that they did not impact on pace or quality of the learning experience. I like to demonstrate in the moment support and have evidenced this while the children are working, I intuitively 'chirp' key information to support learning and use pupils' work as a model to support others in achieving good outcomes. This was noted by my mentor in my first placements as a clear strength.

I have developed my understanding across the curriculum and have a good level of starting knowledge which I have refined by learning more about how this is taught and structured in specifically KS1. I have used and continued to use a variety of learning resources, which has helped me become more skilled at sequencing these resources, whilst keeping the levels of pupil engagement high. I always plan for pupil misconceptions allowing time in the lesson to reiterate understanding of the pupils and have found this particularly helpful in achieving learning objectives and success criteria. During my placements, children willingly 'fixed' their work and were keen to achieve as realised that it was the expectation of the learning, and it would be rewarded through house points. My Phonics, English and Maths teaching are of the teaching standard, and I have been proud to see the children make good progress in my lessons and engage fully with my pacey teaching. I am very familiar with Little Wandle Phonics after both my placement schools have used the scheme.

I developed my assessment abilities further during my second placement, following a positive first placement. My feedback is timely and well considered and I have become more skilled at monitoring the progress of groups and individuals during my lessons. I have used Tapestry to communicate achievements with parents as well as attending parents evening. I have also used CPOMS in my previous placement schools for various safeguarding concerns, practiced in my previous school which has helped me develop confidence in having difficult conversations with parents and carers should they be needed.
