My Summary
About Me
I am a grandmother to a beautiful 19 month old little boy, and have been involved in looking after him, including when he was a newborn, and at 19 months for an extended period. He lives in Australia, so flexible working is essential for me, to enable me to visit when the opportunity arises. I have just returned from a 7 week stay. (NB In general my visits are 12-18 months apart, due to the cost of flights and managing responsibilities to support local family.)
I am also involved in helping my Dad, who is 87 and needs additional support with household management, whilst remaining fabulous and fun.
I am a qualified teacher but settled in my career as HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) across two settings spanning 16 years, since finding early on that anxiety and ADD traits contributed to too high stress as a teacher. I enjoyed my career but have now embraced a more gently pace of life. I volunteer as Sunday school leader at my local church (DBS holder of course) and clean for two very lovely senior citizens on Mondays. I also help to look after my father-in-law's garden and try not to neglect my own wild garden space, in which I grow apples, rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants and as many flowers that manage to resist being eaten by the friendly wildlife.
My Experience
I have 16 years experience working with children and young adults age 11-18 in both a correctional institution (HMYOI) and more recently at a local secondary school. Much of my experience was with children and young people with additional needs and disabilities. I am trained in teaching literacy skills for adults and children who have dyslexia traits and in working with children and young people on the Austism spectrum. I have experienced anxiety disorder myself, so am especially compassionate towards parents and young ones who face similar challenges. My recent newborn and infant experience comes from helping out when my grandson was born and looking after him for a seven week period at 19 months (14th Oct - 3rd Dec) while his Mummy did supply teaching work.
My Qualifications
BA(HONS) East European Studies with German, PGCE (MFL) and SpLD Diploma (Specific Learning Disability)
