My Experience

Children, Young People and Families Practitioner (CYPFP) Level 4 apprenticeship standard Qualified

I have been a Residential Childcare Worker for just over two years. Whilst working in the care home, I have a focus on using a therapeutic, holistic and PACE approach to practice, a good understanding of Kim Golding’s Pyramid of Needs and how all of this supports our Young People. Staff are required to have a solid knowledge of these theories / strategies, be mindful of the 9 Quality Standards, the home’s statement of purpose, policies, procedures and national legislations.

During my time working in a care home, I have experienced many challenging behaviours (Mispers, Self harm, hospitalisation, and other incidents such as verbal altercations) from our Young People and am able to meet this with a strong resilience and empathetic, calm approach. This is thanks in part, to my own calm personality but also due to a good understanding of the “Team Teach” training course which explains how best to verbally deescalate an altercation. I also have first aid, fire safety and food hygiene training which I utilise daily.

I enjoy spending time with the Young People and assisting them in every aspect of their lives. It is fulfilling to see a Young Person come into our care and flourish, it gives a brilliant sense of achievement and job satisfaction. I like to take an interest in the Young People’s hobbies and encourage them to engage in fun activities as this helps us to develop a positive relationship and gives them special memories to look back on later in life.
