About Me

Hi, I’m Ruby! I’m a dedicated and enthusiastic nanny and early years practitioner with a passion for supporting children’s emotional, social, and academic development. My approach is firmly rooted in psychology, specifically child development and attachment theory, and I bring this academic understanding to all my work, combined with years of hands-on experience across various settings.

I have worked with children from the age of 2 through to 18 years old, supporting their development in school, home and special needs settings. My journey into the world of childcare began with a psychology degree that focused on child development and it has since expanded into a career where I’ve found my true passion – guiding and nurturing children as they navigate the world around them.

One of the aspects of my work that I find most rewarding is supporting children through periods of dysregulation and emotional growth. I’m deeply experienced in working with children with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, autism, and those who have experienced trauma. I’m trained in trauma-informed care, and have a special focus on how emotional literacy, positive reinforcement and safe, structured routines can make a profound difference in children's lives. I firmly believe that when children feel emotionally secure, they are able to reach their full potential in all areas.

As I continue my journey into early years education, I’m eager to incorporate my skills and knowledge into creating an environment where children feel loved, safe, and excited to learn. Whether we’re engaged in imaginative play, experimenting with creative activities, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk in nature, I always strive to foster an atmosphere where children are encouraged to explore, think critically, and express themselves fully.

My work with children also includes fostering independence, enhancing social communication, and promoting healthy habits such as regular routines, good nutrition, and physical activity. I truly enjoy seeing children blossom, whether it’s helping them learn to read for the first time, managing their feelings, or just creating a safe space for them to be themselves.

My Experience

My professional journey in childcare started with working at a Primary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), where I had the privilege of developing and delivering 1:1 interventions for children with SEMH needs. I also taught science and cookery, lessons designed to be hands-on and engaging, aimed at fostering emotional expression, critical thinking, and creativity. This experience taught me the power of using practical learning to engage children who had often fallen behind in more traditional classroom settings, and it further deepened my passion for supporting children’s emotional development through play-based learning and creative expression.

After this, I transitioned to providing part-time childcare for children aged 2 to 6, including those with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing issues. I worked in partnership with parents to offer structure and consistency while also encouraging independent play, emotional regulation, and self-expression. A significant part of this role was focusing on children’s social communication, executive function skills, and developing their fine motor abilities. By creating a nurturing, responsive environment, I was able to empower children to meet their developmental milestones while fostering a positive sense of self.

I then moved on to special needs schools, where I supported children with a range of needs, including dyslexia, autism, and physical disabilities. My focus was on offering tailored support for dysregulation, helping children navigate school routines, and assisting them in managing complex emotions. I also implemented strategies for executive function development, assisting children in improving their focus, organization, and ability to manage transitions. I used positive reinforcement and structured activities to help children feel motivated and empowered.

Currently, I am about to embark on an exciting new role in a nursery setting, working with children aged 6 months to 5 years. This opportunity will allow me to apply my extensive knowledge of early childhood brain development and attachment theory while continuing to build on my ability to create a safe and structured environment where children can thrive. I’m eager to work with this age group and support the development of early learning, emotional regulation, and social skills as children explore their world and develop foundational skills for life.

Across all my roles, I have developed strong expertise in working with children to promote self-regulation, social communication, and emotional development. I am confident in my ability to support children through challenges, particularly in areas like executive function, fine motor development, and speech and language skills. I always work closely with parents and professionals to ensure that each child receives the most effective support possible, tailored to their unique needs and temperament.
