About Me

Hi, I'm Thea!
I'm passionate about teaching and being part of the village helping to support children who are struggling with confidence and worries around their academic and leisure pursuits.

I'm a keen practitioner of mindfulness. For fun, I swim, knit and play Classical music on the piano, violin and oboe including solo, ensemble and orchestral arrangements with friends and professionally.

Currently learning: French at a professional level - I am aiming to become fluent before my next birthday, watch this space!

Currently reading: The Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler (a chilling read)

My Experience

BACKGROUND:
With the Piano and Oboe as my primary instruments for my first 17 years, I went on the study at the King's College London and the Royal Academy of Music. I also began to audition for professional/amateur orchestras at this point, and have now played for several, including the Wapping Orchestra, The Serafine Sinfonia and The Midlands Chamber Orchestra. It was whilst doing my 1st degree that I began to teach English at a local tuition centre. 3 degrees later, I have now been teaching since 2011 in schools, tuition centres and homes across the UK - mostly in London and the Midlands but more recently in West Sussex. I have extensive experience teaching Piano, Oboe, English and Maths.

AGE & ABILITY LEVEL:
I have experience teaching a wide age range and abilities. My youngest Piano student began at 4 and continued learning with me until she was 15. My older music students often enjoy learning alongside children/grandchildren to inspire the younger ones to practise and fulfil their own desires of music-making. Most of my English and Maths students are/have been studying for their 11-plus exams or GCSE's.

SEN & MENTAL HEALTH:
I am skilled and practised at adapting material, in a science-led way, so that it's appropriate for children and adults with SEN and other neuro-developmental differences and/or disabilities, such as autism and dyslexia. Having recently trained to deliver therapeutic interventions, I am more sensitive to the mental health needs of my students (I do not offer therapy sessions). I am keenly aware of the felt pressures to achieve academically. Therefore I aim to provide as enjoyable a learning experience as possible in my lessons, rather than be a source of further stress or worry.

RESULTS I GET:
As a part of my past roles, I have supported children to gain and maintain their places in competitive academic institutions and orchestras, such as the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, BRIT School and Dulwich College. Part of my experience in private tuition has been to motivate and support children to compete for their 11-plus exams as well as with ABRSM music exams. I have a 100% Pass rate for Piano, Oboe and Theory exams, and over 80% of my 11-plus students are successful getting into a Grammar School. Other (not so measurable) results include increased confidence, finally being able to sing and play the piano at the same time and learning to love a previously disliked subject - which in my eyes are just as important as exam results.
