My Experience
I believe that there is nothing better than hearing the sound of a child laughing or seeing the smile of success on their faces when they’ve conquered a task for the first time. To be able to work in this sector of education and care is so rewarding, I absolutely love every minute of it.
I first started to work with children professionally 14 years ago while at college, I volunteered at my local primary school teaching dance. From there I was employed as a part time teaching assistant while studying at University. I loved my experience at Newport Primary school, they gave me the experience and knowledge to help me complete my University course and go on to a career in childcare.
In April 2010 I moved from my hometown Middlesbrough to London for a role as a nursery teacher at world renown children’s nursery Pippa Popins. Here I worked for 2.5years teaching a transition class (Nursery age 3-4years). I also had the role of head of sen within in the nursery and creating the phonics curriculum.
At the beginning of 2013 I thought it was time for a change and decided to experience childcare through nannying. I was a live out nanny to 3 beautiful children aged; newborn, 2.5year and 5.5years of age. I had sole charge and loved every minute. I was also lucky enough to travel with the family on their holidays. The only reason for leaving this role was due to the fact they moved out to Hampshire.
I went on to being a 1:1 with a little girl with development delays and dyspraxia in a mainstream school called King Solomon Academy. This was a wonderful rewarding job role as she reached new targets that her parents and teachers didn't think she would reach.
After working in the school for two terms I realised I missed nannying and that relationship you get with working so closely with a family. But I knew I wanted to stay working with children with special needs.
I found a family who I am still currently still with, in July 2014. They’re a family of four, and had come over from the USA for a clinical trial at Great Ormond Street for their son Storm who is now 8.5years of age. Storm has a genetic condition called Batten Disease (Cln2 Infertile). Sadly this condition is terminal and children do not reach their teens. Thankfully the trial Storm is on, slows down the deterioration of the condition and he’s doing absolutely brilliant. The family are currently fighting for it to be funded on the nhs so that all children with Cln2 Batten Disease can access the drug to give all children with this awful condition a better and longer quality of life. The only reason for me sadly leaving this family after just under 5 years is because the drug is now legal, so this means they can go home to the USA and get the drug on insurance.
I cannot put into words how much I have loved working with this family. Helping both boys to grow, and Storms younger brother; especially to learn how to cope and help his older brother with Batten’s. I have learnt a lot about the different effects Batten’s has on Storm and the family, medically and emotionally.
I feel with my professional and life experience (I have two brothers with special needs; Down Syndrome & Lennox Gastaut) that I have a lot to give to a family.
I am the youngest of 5 children, and have three nieces and two nephews. I grew up in a busy household due to having many siblings and two with heavy special needs. I needed to be organised to be able to cope with school work, helping my parents and my hobbies.
I am a successful Irish dancer, competing to world championship level across the world. I also completed up to black belt in kickboxing. I am huge a huge football fan with my team being the mighty boro!
I’m sure you can tell or hoping you can tell haha! From this that I am very active and creative. I love finding fun ways to help children develop and complete the task in hand.
I love being outdoors, as my parents always said to us; There is no such thing as bad weather but bad clothing.
I currently live with my long term boyfriend and beagle puppy who is 6.5months. We love going for long walks and he currently comes to work with me and is amazing with the children.
I am a very straightforward person and believe honesty and communication is key when working with a family. I don’t hold grudges and believe in resolving problems quickly and to move on. I believe highly in good manners and being strict but fair and fun. I love to cook and create nutritious meals and healthy snacks and have my own healthy cooking page for children.
I hope we are a match to be able to work together as a family and look forward to hearing from you soon :-)
